At the core of my practice based in painting and drawing is the application of craft techniques. I make ‘crafted’ paintings: works where the material application is built on the surface using methods inherent to weaving, tapestry and ceramics. My unconventional approach has entailed a search for strategies that complicate a conventional painterly language: where the tension on a painting’s surface offers cues from which to understand its creation, disrupting accepted historical gestures. My conceptual approach weaves together hybrid traditions to present a handcrafted image, rather than an illusionistic one. I am interested in eco-feminist approaches to technique and narrative in a decolonial stance where the painterly gestures of history are decoded and rebuilt with crafted and handmade, designed approaches.
